Obstacles employees with foreign backgrounds meet when applying for education and employment in the service sector

Project aim

The aim of the project was to find out what kind of obstacles employees with foreign backgrounds meet when they apply for higher vocational education. The project also charted the employment of tourism, catering and domestic services students with foreign backgrounds and what obstacles they encounter.

The project was carried out from January 1st, 2007 to December 1st, 2007 on the operating fields of the participating universities of applied sciences in Uusimaa, Central Finland, Southern Savonia and North Karelia. The participating institutes were HaagaHelia University of Applied Sciences, Laurea, Stadia (nowadays part of Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences), Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences, Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences and North Karelia University of Applied Sciences.

The results will be used to study the selection criteria of higher vocational education in tourism, catering and domestic services as well as forms of support needed in applying for education and finding employment.
