Accessible learning environments project

JAMK University of Applied Sciences

The project focused on developing physical and above all pedagogic accessibility in learning environments.

The aim of the project was to develop a pedagogic practices model and practical teaching and counselling work from the accessibility point of view. This would enable students who have special needs for support and/or who have different language and cultural background to have a degree from a higher education institution and participate in continuing education.

Project methods:

  • develop and evaluate accessible physical and pedagogic learning environment suited for higher education
  • develop student counselling, guidance and support services
  • design and produce training, which offers information on special pedagogy and multicultural questions to teaching, counselling and support servives staff.
  • Use publications, seminars and networks to create a base for wider recognition of accessibility

The project, coordinated by the School of Vocational Teacher Education, was carried out in 2007-2008 in co-operation with JAMK University of Applied Sciences units and support services, as well as partners.

The main goal of the second year of the project (2008) was to continue developing accessibility practices model, methods and guidance system for higher education institutions, as well as to disseminate the developed practices models and methods in training and seminars, while operating in both national and international partnership networks.
